Apple to Launch iOS 27 with Rebuilt Siri AI on September 14

Apple to Launch iOS 27 with Rebuilt Siri AI on September 14

Apple is releasing its new iPhone software, iOS 27, on Monday, September 14, 2026. The company shared this news at its September 9 event.

This update brings a brand-new, smart virtual assistant named “Siri AI” to newer iPhones. Siri AI has been in beta testing since early summer.

The software comes just days before Apple’s new phones hit stores on September 18. These new phones include the iPhone 18 Pro, the iPhone 18 Pro Max, and Apple’s first folding phone, the iPhone Duo.

Older iPhones dating back to 2019 will still get iOS 27. These older phones will see speed and design upgrades. However, the best Siri AI features need powerful hardware. They are also limited by local laws and business rules in some areas.

The Big ‘Siri AI’ Update

A Smarter Assistant

Siri AI is Apple’s biggest software change in years. Siri is now a smart helper that understands what is on your screen. It can work across 300,000 supported apps.

Siri can now look at your emails, text messages, photos, and notes to answer questions. For example, Siri can see a hotel booking on your screen, find a restaurant your friend texted you about, and plan your day without opening other apps.

New Siri App and Camera Tools

Apple gave Siri its own app. This app saves your past chats and syncs them across your Apple devices using iCloud. You can even pin your favorite chats.

Siri is also built into the Camera app. A new Visual Intelligence feature lets you point your camera at things to get answers. You can point it at a plate of food to see nutrition facts. You can also point it at a receipt to easily split a restaurant bill using Apple Cash.

Better Writing Help

Siri AI can now help you write and edit text. It can write emails from scratch. It can even learn your writing style so the text sounds exactly like you. It will also fix spelling and grammar mistakes automatically as you type.

How Siri AI Works

Apple and Google Working Together

Siri AI uses a mix of local processing and cloud power to keep your data safe. It uses five new Apple AI models. Two models run right on your phone for quick tasks.

For harder tasks, your phone uses Apple’s Private Cloud Compute. This sends data to secure Apple servers. These servers process the request and instantly delete the data. Apple cannot see or save this information.

For the hardest AI jobs, Apple partnered with Google. Apple is paying Google about $1 billion a year to use a custom Gemini AI model. Apple removes personal details like your name and location before sending data to Google. Google is not allowed to use your data to train its own AI.

Which Phones Get Siri AI?

Hardware Needs

While iOS 27 works on many older phones, Siri AI needs a fast chip. Basic AI features need the A17 Pro chip. This means standard iPhone 15 models will not get the new Siri.

The most advanced on-device features need 12GB of RAM. Only the newest phones, like the iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone Air, and iPhone 18 Pro series, have this much memory.

Feature LevelSupported PhonesWhat is Needed
Basic iOS 27iPhone 11 to iPhone 15, iPhone SE (2nd Gen+)A13 Bionic chip or newer
Siri AIiPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 16, 17, and 18 series, iPhone DuoA17 Pro chip, 8GB RAM
Advanced AIiPhone 17 Pro / Pro Max, iPhone Air, iPhone 18 Pro / Pro Max12GB RAM

The Folding iPhone Duo

The iOS 27 update also brings special features for the new iPhone Duo. This is Apple’s first folding phone.

When you unfold the device to its 7.6-inch screen, the menus move to the side. This gives you more room to view things. The phone also gets “Split View.” This lets you run two apps side-by-side, like reading a website while chatting with Siri AI.

Business Security and Rule Problems

Risks for Work Phones

Siri AI causes some headaches for workplace IT teams. Users can now choose to use third-party AI models like ChatGPT or Google Gemini instead of Apple’s models.

This means company data could be sent to outside companies. Siri can also read data from business apps on the phone. This makes it hard for strict industries like healthcare and finance to use these new tools safely.

Delays in Europe and China

Blocked by Laws

Apple is not releasing Siri AI everywhere. In the European Union, strict technology laws called the Digital Markets Act have caused a delay. Apple has completely blocked Siri AI on iPhones and iPads in the EU for now.

EU users can only use it on Mac computers. The EU government does not agree with Apple’s reasons for the delay.

Siri AI is also blocked in China until the government approves it.

Where it is available, Siri AI will only speak English at launch. More languages, like Spanish and French, will come in October 2026. Also, Siri AI is blocked for anyone under 13 years old.

Upgrades for Older Phones

Faster Speeds

If your phone is too old for Siri AI, iOS 27 is still a great update. Apple made the system run much faster.

TaskSpeed IncreasePhone Tested On
Opening AppsUp to 30% fasteriPhone 11 Pro Max
Loading PhotosUp to 70% fasteriPhone 15
AirDrop SharingUp to 80% fasteriPhone 16 Plus

Based on Apple’s testing.

Better Looks and Useful Tools

The update adds a new “Liquid Glass” tool. This lets you change how clear or colorful your app icons and menus look. Wi-Fi and cell service will also stay connected much better.

The Safari web browser now has a “Notify Me” tool. It watches websites for you and tells you if a price drops or an item comes back in stock. The Passwords app will find weak passwords and fix them for you.

Finally, parents get better Screen Time tools. They can set daily limits for games or social media. A new tool requires kids to ask for permission before visiting new websites.

People Also Ask

When does iOS 27 come out?

Apple will release iOS 27 globally as a free update on Monday, September 14, 2026.

Will my older iPhone get the new Siri AI?

Is Siri AI free to use?

Yes, but it has limits. Some server-based features have daily usage caps, and Apple might charge a fee for expanded access in the future.

Will Siri AI be available in Europe and China?

Not at launch on the iPhone. Apple delayed Siri AI on iPhones and iPads in the European Union due to the Digital Markets Act, and it is blocked entirely in China pending government approval.

Does iOS 27 make old iPhones faster?

Yes. Even without AI, iOS 27 can launch apps up to 30% faster, load photos up to 70% faster, and send files via AirDrop up to 80% faster.
